This obelisk stands in the grounds of the ruinous Dunglass Castle and was erected in 1838 to commemorate Scottish Engineer Henry Bell (1767-1830).
In August 1812 Bell introduced the first commercial steamship service in Europe using his 30-ton steam driven paddle steamer 'Comet'.
This photograph was taken a few days before the 200th anniversary of Comet's first passenger sailing. The obelisk is in need of some Tender Loving Care. Perhaps before the 250th anniversary?
